Model Context Protocol · L1 · 15 min

The problem MCP names

Learn in five minutes

  • Tools written for one app are hard to reuse in another.
  • MCP is a public protocol for hosts, clients, and servers.
  • The site modelcontextprotocol.io is the citation. Confirm the current revision.
  • This lab does not ship a server you should expose to the internet.
  • Names of products that speak MCP change. Confirm before relying.

The learning goal is the shape: a host asks a server for tools, the person consents, the server runs the tool. The brand of the host is secondary.

Ecosystem

MCP
Model Context Protocol, a public way for hosts to use tool servers.

Sisters: Plugins, Function calling, Language-server ideas.

A notes server can serve chat and a voice host if both speak the same protocol.

Treat the spec revision as something you pin, like a model id.

Config

  • Write the goal in one sentence.
  • Name the input and the allowed output.
  • Save the trace next to the result.

Troubleshooting

  • The answer looks fluent and is wrong. Check whether a source passage actually contains the claim.
  • The loop never stops. Set a step cap and stop when the tool result repeats.
