# LiveKit, Jitsi, Matrix, and Jami

Study notes. Not vendor documentation and not legal advice.

- Jitsi's handbook says Jitsi is a video conferencing platform built from open-source projects, and the article says the project hosts meet.jit.si for free community use.
- The article names Jitsi Meet, Jitsi Videobridge, and the older Jitsi Desktop, once called SIP Communicator.
- Matrix's spec says it defines open APIs for decentralised communication over a federation of servers with no single point of control, using JSON, for IM, VoIP signalling, and bridging silos.
- Jami's site says it is free, end-to-end encrypted, and private, with messaging, calls, conferences, and screen sharing, and that it can function as a SIP client.
- The Jami site's news list includes an item dated 1 September 2026 titled Jami Web, First Preview. That is a page date, not a standard.

Browser meeting: Jitsi Meet or a LiveKit room. Phone caller into an agent: LiveKit SIP participant, or a CPaaS trunk. Federated chat: Matrix. A SIP softphone that is also a messenger: Jami, and then test the SIP client claim against the build you installed.
