Licenses, codecs, and what you may copy
Protocol text is under the IETF trust provisions, and codec rights have to be read from the codec's own documents.
Learn in 5 minutes
- Point at the IETF Trust Legal Provisions for protocol text
- Separate Opus documents from G.711 and G.729
- Refuse to state a patent expiry date
Visual
This lesson is not legal advice. It tells you which documents to read.
Worked example
Name the codec document The offer uses static payload 0. Identify which recommendation defines that codec.
- Dissect the INVITE.
- Find a=rtpmap:0.
- Name the recommendation, not the SIP RFC.
Fault
A runbook includes several pages copied from RFC 3261, and a second note says G.729 patents expired last year.
Copying specification text is a trust-provisions question. A patent expiry is a fact this course will not assert.

AI omni-channel agents A voice bot still needs a session. SIP creates, modifies, and ends sessions. Omni-channel, in the contact-center sense, means the same contact can also live on chat or another digital channel. Those channels do not replace the voice session. On Amazon Connect the platform owns the managed PSTN voice channel. Bridging an outside carrier into Connect with a Chime Voice Connector is not a supported pattern unless AWS reviews it. When an SBC forks the voice leg to a recorder, that fork is SIPREC, a different plane from the customer dialog.

The FreeSWITCH manual page also describes SignalWire, founded by the FreeSWITCH team, as a hosted platform with AI agents behind REST APIs and SWML.
