How to read an RFC

A SIP argument cites the RFC number and the section, and the normative sentences outrank a broken example.

Learn in 5 minutes

  1. Separate Standards Track text from an Informational map
  2. Cite a rule by RFC and section
  3. Use the ABNF and the prose together

Visual

Each arrow has a chapter · study drawing · cyphermonkeylabs.com AliceSBCBob INVITE 100 INVITE 180 180 200 200 ACK

SVG HTML PNG

Memorize the chapter map. You will use it every time a trace disagrees with a product screen.

Worked example

Point at the chapter Step the ladder. For the ACK, name the fact that separates it from the INVITE transaction.

  1. Play through the 200 OK.
  2. Inspect the ACK.
  3. Compare its Via branch with the INVITE branch.

Fault

A change request says the proxy is wrong because a blog rewrote an example and dropped a header.

The ABNF and section 8 require Call-ID. An example that omits it is broken.
