Survivability during cutover

Learn it in 5 minutes

  • Cloud calling needs a plan for when the cloud path is down.
  • A survivability gateway is a Webex Calling feature. Confirm it is on your subscription.
  • SRST is the CUCM-era feature. It does not automatically cover Webex apps.
  • Emergency calling must be tested on the fallback path.
  • Write who can call whom when the WAN is down.

What is going on

Cutover weekend is the worst time to discover that branch phones have no local PSTN. If the design uses a survivability gateway, test it before you move the numbers. If the design is CUCM with SRST, test SRST. Do not assume one covers the other.

Confirm before relying. Confirm survivability gateway support and limits in the current Webex Calling guide.

Worked example

After the site moves to Calling, you pull the WAN. The survivability gateway registers the phones it is responsible for and places a local emergency call. If that call fails, the site is not ready, even if the happy-path cloud call worked.

Quiz

1. SRST protects Webex Calling apps with no extra design.

Ecosystem

Sister pieces sit on the ecosystem page: the glossary, the mind map, the integration map, and the sibling labs.

  • Survivability gateway — A local gateway mode that keeps selected Calling users up during a cloud outage.
  • Fallback test — A planned failure of the primary path.

Config. Name the gateway, the users in scope, and the emergency number you will dial in a test window.

Troubleshooting. A test that only pings the gateway does not prove a call.

Bridge. Keep the CUCM SRST test in the old design until that site has actually moved.
