Dial peers

Learn it in 5 minutes

  • A dial peer matches an incoming or outgoing call.
  • Inbound SIP matching checks URI headers before called number on current Cisco IOS guidance.
  • Outbound hunt prefers the longest match, then preference.
  • Preference is not the same as a CUCM route list.
  • A peer with no session target does not send a call.

What is going on

Engineers memorize one match order and apply it to every release. Cisco's SIP matching article is the source for the release you run. The teaching order used here is URI, then called number, then calling number for inbound SIP, and longest match then preference for outbound. Confirm that article before you change a production peer.

Confirm before relying. Confirm inbound match order in the IOS dial-peer guide for your release.

Worked example

Two outbound peers match the same number. Preference 1 points at a dead carrier. The call waits on that peer until the timeout, then tries preference 2. Users call it slow dial tone to the PSTN.

Quiz

1. Outbound dial-peer preference is consulted before match length.

Ecosystem

Sister pieces sit on the ecosystem page: the glossary, the mind map, the integration map, and the sibling labs.

  • Dial peer — An IOS rule that matches a call and names a target.
  • Preference — A tie-break after match length.

Config. debug voip dialpeer inout is noisy. Use it on one call, then turn it off.

Troubleshooting. If the wrong carrier gets the call, print the matched peer number from the debug, not from memory.

Bridge. CUCM route patterns and IOS dial peers are two plans. Draw both.
