How a guide tells you to get a number

The habit is the part you can repeat. Two numbers, a messaging profile, a Bearer token kept outside the note, and a POST to the messages path. Copying the sample digits into production is not what the guide is for.

  • Telnyx's first-message guide says to buy two numbers so you can test messaging between them without registration requirements.
  • The guide's steps name Numbers, then Search and Buy, an area code or region, and an SMS feature check.
  • It then says to add a messaging profile and assign that profile to each number.
  • The send call in the guide is an HTTP POST to https://api.telnyx.com/v2/messages with a Bearer token.
  • The JSON fields the guide shows are from, to, and text. The sample digits in the guide are placeholders, not a number this lab assigns.

What is going on

The habit is the part you can repeat. Two numbers, a messaging profile, a Bearer token kept outside the note, and a POST to the messages path. Copying the sample digits into production is not what the guide is for.

Bandwidth's messaging guide starts from an account and a real phone number on a trial path. It does not use Telnyx's profile object. Write the vendor next to the steps.

Worked example

In a lab notebook, write the four Telnyx steps and then the word secret next to the API key. Do not paste the key. Write confirm next to any monthly number fee. That fee was not on this guide.

Quiz

1. The Telnyx guide sends a message with HTTP POST to https://api.telnyx.com/v2/messages.

2. The sample from and to values are numbers this lab owns.

Ecosystem

Sister pieces sit on the ecosystem page: the glossary, the mind map, the integration map, and the bridges.

  • Messaging profile — The Telnyx object the guide says to create and assign to a number before the send call.
  • Bearer token — The Authorization scheme in the Telnyx sample. The key itself stays out of this repository.

Config. Record the endpoint and the field names. Store the token in the portal or a secret store, not in git.

Troubleshooting. A 401 on that POST points at the token before it points at the numbering plan. A missing profile points at the assignment step the guide lists.

Bridge. E.164 is how you should read the from and to fields. The guide's placeholders are examples of that shape.

Mind map, sister technologies, and future hooks live on the ecosystem page.
