  • Wikipedia says Enhanced 911 automatically provides the caller's location to 911 dispatchers in North America, and that 911 is the emergency number in that region.
  • It says the European Union has a similar system, E112, and that a vehicle call of that kind is called eCall.
  • An incoming 911 call goes to a public safety answering point. The PSAP article says that call center receives landline, mobile, and VoIP calls for first responders.
  • The E911 article says the dispatcher's computer receives a physical address for landlines or geographic coordinates for wireless.
  • Next Generation 911, on its article, aims to update 911 in the United States and Canada so people can send text, images, video, and location to the PSAP. NENA identified the need in 2000, the article says.

Ecosystem

Sister pieces sit on the ecosystem page: the glossary, the mind map, the integration map, and the bridges.

  • PSAP — Public safety answering point. The call center the E911 and PSAP articles describe.
  • NG911 — The initiative the Next Generation 911 article describes for text, images, video, and location, intended to replace E911 infrastructure over time.

Config. In a design note, write which country and which number. 911 and 112 are both named above. They are not interchangeable.

Troubleshooting. A call that connects with no location matches the gap between basic voice and the E911 article's address or coordinates. Check the address association in the vendor room before you blame the PSAP.

Bridge. VoIP is explicitly a kind of line the PSAP article says it can receive. A CPaaS call is not exempt from the location problem just because it is an API.
