01 · Executive summary

Five lines, then why it matters

  • An entry point is the ingress. Telephony maps it to a number. The flow is attached through a routing strategy. Messaging and social flows are chosen in Webex Connect. [cite:1]
  • A routing strategy is a window: dates, 24-hour times, weekdays, a flow version, and an optional default flag. The article still supports existing strategies and points you at Business Hours. [cite:4]
  • Team-assignment queues expand through call distribution groups. Agent-assignment queues name up to 1000 agents and do not expand on a timer. [cite:2] [cite:3]
  • Patterns in the current articles: Longest Available, Circular, Top-down, and Best Available. They are not all offered on every queue. [cite:2] [cite:3]
  • Best Available ranks proficiency. Weights do not affect Longest Available. A variable queue that wanted skills is forced to Longest Available. [cite:2] [cite:5]
Why it matters. Interviewers ask which algorithm you would pick. The wrong answer is “the same one on every queue.” The Labs simulator will refuse a pattern the article does not offer for that queue type.

What the pattern is allowed to see

Eligible, then ranked

Every pattern in these articles starts from agents who already qualify. Longest Available then uses idle time. Circular and top-down use the configured order. Best Available uses a proficiency score. [cite:2]

Two different “skills”

Skills on the queue make the agent pool implicit and the same for every contact. Skills injected by the flow travel with the contact, can relax over time, and still sit on a team-assignment queue with call distribution groups. [cite:2]

Not a fifth algorithm

T3-R01 left a fourth name unverified because the overview listed three. The routing article’s agent-assignment section names Linear/Top-down as well. That is the fourth name. It is not available on a team non-skill queue. [cite:2]

Sign-in picks the team

An agent configured on two teams counts only for the team they choose at sign-in, and only for the call distribution group that contains that team. [cite:2]

Where each pattern is documented

PatternQueue types that name itSelectionCite
Longest AvailableNon-skill team (default). Also listed for agent assignment and for skill ties.Longest idle among agents who already match.[cite:2] [cite:3]
CircularNon-skill agent assignment (default), and listed among agent-assignment patterns.Next available agent after the last one selected.[cite:2] [cite:3]
Top-down / LinearAgent assignment.Always the first available agent in the configured order.[cite:2]
Best AvailableSkill-based.Highest proficiency score. Less-than-or-equal inverts that skill.[cite:2] [cite:3]

Glossary

Entry point
The ingress for a contact. Telephony maps it to the phone number the call arrives on. Email and messaging entry points point at the Webex Connect configuration. [cite:1]
Routing strategy
A schedule on an entry point or queue: start and end date, start and end time in 0000–2400, selected weekdays, and a routing flow with a live or latest version. [cite:4]
Default routing strategy
The flag that makes one strategy the default for that entry point or queue during the time window you set. The article prints the toggle twice in the same procedure. [cite:4]
Business Hours
The model the routing-strategy article tells you to move toward. It does not delete existing strategies. Read holiday priority in the Business Hours article the routing-strategy page points you toward. Existing strategies stay, and the arithmetic lives on that later article because this room’s sources do not restate it.
Queue
The holding place for telephony, chat, email, or social contacts until an agent is selected or the contact is picked up. [cite:2]
Call distribution group
A level of teams on a team-assignment queue. If nobody matches, the contact parks for the configured interval, then the next group is added to the search. [cite:2]
Check Agent Availability
A Queue Contact toggle. If the current call distribution group has no matching agent, the contact expands to the next group immediately instead of waiting out the interval. [cite:2]
Longest Available
Among eligible agents, choose the one who has been available the longest. It is the default routing pattern for a non-skill queue with team assignment. [cite:3]
Circular
Round-robin through the configured agent order. The next contact starts after the agent who took the last one. It is the default for a non-skill queue with agent assignment. [cite:2] [cite:3]
Top-down
Also called Linear. Always walk the ordered agent list from the beginning and take the first available agent with a free channel for that media type. [cite:2]
Best Available
Among agents who fully meet the skill requirements, pick the highest proficiency score. Weights apply to proficiency skills for this pattern. They do not change Longest Available. [cite:2]
Skill criteria on the queue
Skills configured on the queue itself. Any agent whose direct skill profile fully satisfies them is implicitly on the queue. Team does not associate the agent. The contact cannot override the criteria. [cite:2]
Skill requirements in the flow
A team-assignment queue where the flow injects the skills for this contact, and can relax them on a timer while call distribution groups expand. [cite:2]
Skill score
Best Available scoring uses proficiency values of the skills named in the requirement. A less-than-or-equal condition inverts that skill as 10 minus the value. Boolean, text, and enum skills are eligibility filters, not score inputs. [cite:2]
Agent assignment
Agents are added directly to the queue, up to 1000, in an order the routing pattern can use. There is no time-based target expansion. If nobody is free, the contact parks until one of those agents is free or the park times out. [cite:2] [cite:3]
Team login
An agent on two teams is considered only in the team they sign in to, and therefore only in the call distribution group that contains that team. [cite:2]
QueueToAgent
Voice-only path in the architecture article: send the contact to an agent id, and park it on an agent-specific queue if that agent is busy. [cite:1]
Variable queue
Queue Contact can take a queue id from a flow variable, with a fallback queue if the variable is not a valid id. If you also needed skill requirements, the article says the contact is routed Longest Available and the queue’s selected algorithm is overridden. [cite:5]
Get Queue Info
Returns position in queue and estimated wait. Success needs both positive. Team assignment with skills in the flow always returns estimated wait of −1. That product rule is not the Erlang study model on the Labs page. [cite:5]
Webex Connect
Where a non-telephony flow is chosen for messaging and social. The architecture article separates that from the telephony entry point’s routing strategy. [cite:1]

09 · Self-question ladder

Twelve rungs

L1What does an entry point represent for a phone call?

The number the call arrives on. The flow tied to that entry point through a routing strategy handles it. [cite:1]

L1What is a queue?

Where the contact waits until an eligible agent is selected or picks it up. [cite:2]

L2Which patterns can a non-skill team queue use?

The routing article lists Longest Available for that queue type. The queue article says Longest Available is the default. [cite:2] [cite:3]

L2Which patterns can a non-skill agent-assignment queue use?

Longest Available, Circular, and Linear/Top-down. Circular is the default. There is no timed target expansion. [cite:2] [cite:3]

L2When is Best Available a choice?

Skill-based queues. It ranks agents who fully meet the requirements by proficiency score. [cite:2] [cite:3]

L3How does a call distribution group expand?

The contact searches the first group. If nobody matches, it parks for the configured duration, then the next group’s teams are added. A later free agent in an earlier group can still be chosen. [cite:2]

L3What does Check Agent Availability change?

An empty current group is skipped immediately, from the Queue Contact activity. [cite:2]

L3How is top-down different from circular?

Top-down always starts at the beginning of the ordered list. Circular resumes after the last selected agent. [cite:2]

L4What does a less-than-or-equal skill do to a Best Available score?

That skill’s value is inverted: 10 minus the actual value. Only proficiency skills enter the score. [cite:2]

L4Why would a variable queue not honor Best Available?

The flow article says you cannot enter skill requirements on a variable queue, and the contact is routed Longest Available, overriding the queue algorithm. [cite:5]

L5Where is the flow chosen for WhatsApp or email?

The architecture article says non-telephony flows are chosen in the Webex Connect configuration, not only on the telephony routing strategy. [cite:1]

L5Is the Labs Erlang number the product’s estimated wait?

No. Get Queue Info uses the article’s sample rules, including −1 when wait does not apply. The Erlang panel is labeled a study model. [cite:5]

10 · Lab

A tenant checklist, plus the zero-key simulator

The zero-key version is the WxCC panel on the Labs page. It applies the pattern rules above and a separate Erlang-style wait that is labeled a study model.

11 · Quiz

Twelve questions

Q1MCQ

A non-skill queue with team assignment defaults to which pattern?

Answer

A non-skill queue with team assignment defaults to which pattern: Longest Available. [cite:3]

Q2MCQ

A non-skill queue with agents added directly defaults to which pattern?

Answer

Circular. You can still choose Longest Available or Linear/Top-down. The article’s agent cap on that queue is 1000. [cite:3]

Q3Scenario

Agents are ordered A3, A4, A5. A3 is available. A second contact arrives while A3 is still available. Which pattern can prefer A3 again?

Answer

Top-down. It walks from the start every time, so A3 is offered again while A3 is still available. Circular would move on. [cite:2]

Q4Scenario

The same order, and the last contact went to A4. A3 is free again. Which pattern offers the next contact to A5 if A5 is next and free?

Answer

Circular. It continues after the last selected agent, so the next free agent after A4 is A5. Top-down would offer A3 again. [cite:2]

Q5MCQ

Weights on a proficiency skill change which pattern?

Answer

Best Available. They do not change Longest Available. [cite:2]

Q6MCQ

Who is implicitly on a queue whose skills are configured on the queue itself?

Answer

Who is implicitly on a queue whose skills are configured on the queue itself: Agents whose direct skill profile fully satisfies the criteria. Team membership is not the association. [cite:2]

Q7Scenario

An agent belongs to team 1 and team 2 and signs in on team 1. Which call distribution group can see them?

Answer

Only the group that contains team 1. [cite:2]

Q8MCQ

Music on hold on a routing strategy applies to which channels?

Answer

Music on hold on a routing strategy applies to which channels: Voice. The article says it is not applicable for email and chat strategies. [cite:4]

Q9Scenario

Queue Contact uses a variable queue id and you also wanted skill requirements. What algorithm does the flow article apply?

Answer

Longest Available, overriding the queue’s selected algorithm. Set a fallback queue for an invalid id. [cite:5]

Q10MCQ

Estimated wait is −1 and position in queue is a positive number on a team queue with skills in the flow. Which Get Queue Info branch is that?

Answer

Insufficient Information. Success requires both values positive. [cite:5]

Q11Draw

Name the four routing patterns this room is allowed to teach, and the queue family each one belongs to.

Answer

Longest Available: team non-skill default, also offered on agent-assignment and as the skill-based alternative to Best Available. Circular and Top-down: agent-assignment queues. Best Available: skill-based, by proficiency score. Do not invent a fifth. [cite:2] [cite:3]

Q12Scenario

The strategy window is 0900–1700 and the contact arrives at 0800. What runs?

Answer

Not that strategy, unless another strategy or the Business Hours flow covers 0800. Times are 0000–2400. [cite:4]

13 · Interview

Oral answers

30 seconds. An entry point receives the contact. A routing strategy picks the flow for that window. The queue then uses only the pattern that queue type allows: Longest Available, Circular, Top-down, or Best Available.

2 minutes. Team queues expand through call distribution groups and default to Longest Available when they are not skill-based. Agent-assignment queues list up to 1000 agents, default to Circular, and can also run top-down, which always restarts at the first agent. Skill queues choose Longest Available or Best Available. Best Available scores proficiency and can invert a less-than-or-equal skill. Weights do not affect Longest Available.

30 seconds, variable queue. If the queue id comes from a variable and you wanted skills, Flow Designer routes that contact Longest Available and overrides the queue algorithm. Set a fallback for a bad id.

2 minutes, estimated wait. Get Queue Info is the product’s wait. Success needs position and wait both positive. Skilled team-assignment queues always return −1. A textbook Erlang estimate on the Labs page is not that number.

What you will not say. You will not claim a fifth pattern, and you will not map these objects onto UCCE nodes. The crosswalk is written in T6-R04. Unpublished pairs stay marked in that room.
